AUGUST 3, 2004 -  Updated 7:26 AM CDT

MOREHEAD CITY, NC - A hurricane warning is in effect on the North Carolina coast as Hurricane "Alex" approaches the Outer Banks.

It's the first hurricane of the Atlantic season.  It's expected to move over the Outer Banks of North Carolina, then out to sea later today and Wednesday. At last report, the storm was centered about 80 miles South-south west of Cape Lookout, North Carolina.  Top sustained winds have been recorded near 90 miles-an-hour.

A hurricane warning remains in effect along the North Carolina coastline. Boaters throughout the Outer Banks have been warned to be on the lookout for waterspouts.  The storm brought scattered showers along the coast.  Surfers in South Carolina and farther north have been trying their luck.

Forecasters warned swimmers about rip currents along the Southeast coast.
