Wearing the right helmet can save your life

A CDC study found that motorcycle death rates have increased by an alarming 55 percent over a recent eight year period. But wearing a properly made motorcycle helmet could help reduce these deaths.

Helmets with the sticker label "DOT" are approved by the Department of Transportation, and have been crash tested.

"An approved helmet will significantly decrease your chance of death or serious head injury," says State Trooper Matt Harris.

Novelty helmets, that are not approved, are popular among riders who are looking for style. These helmets, however, are not as protective and are not allowed to be worn on the road in states that have helmet laws in place for riders.

"I would never consider riding or getting on the back of a motorcycle without a helmet," says Ashley Kneipp. She was thrown 20 feet off of her boyfriend's motorcycle in a crash. It was the DOT approved helmet that saved her life.
