Vice President Returns to Arkansas Today

AUGUST 3, 2004 - Posted at 7:36 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Those attending Dick Cheney's campaign appearance in Arkansas today won't be required to promise they'll vote for President Bush.

The oaths were required at a Cheney appearance in New Mexico last weekend.  Republicans said they were trying to avoid a rumored protest by Democrats.

This week, Democrats in Arkansas criticized the Bush-Cheney campaign, saying anyone, including Democrats, should be welcome to hear Cheney speak.

Cheney campaign organizers said yesterday that the oaths won't be required at the vice president's two campaign stops today.  He's scheduled to be at a town hall meeting in Hot Springs, then at a rally in Fort Smith.

Democratic vice presidential nominee John Edwards is scheduled to be in North Little Rock for a rally tomorrow.
