AG Seeks Execution Date for Condemned Killer

LITTLE ROCK, AR - Any day now, condemned killer Ricky Dale Newman could get the date with death he says he wants.

Attorney General Mike Beebe has sent a letter to Governor Huckabee requesting the governor set an execution date for Newman.  Newman insists he's ready to die for the 2001 stabbing death of Marie Elaine Cholette in Crawford County.

Crawford County Circuit Judge Gary Cottrell has determined that Newman is competent to waive appeals.

Huckabee spokesman Jim Harris said the governor's office had not received Beebe's letter, which was sent yesterday.

Newman was convicted in Crawford County Circuit Court and sentenced to death in the February 2001 stabbing murder of 46-year-old Cholette.
