MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Don't tell Memphian Rochelle Stevens about dreaming big.  The two-time Olympic runner won the gold during the Atlanta games in 1996.

She knows a little something about what it takes to host the biggest sporting event in the world.

"Yeah, Memphis can do it," said Stevens.  "We just need a whole lot of money to do it."

Memphis was one of 35 cities that got a letter this week from the U.S. Olympic Committee gauging possible locations for the 2024 summer games.

"You know, the Olympics is the granddaddy of them all," said Stevens.  "Bigger than the Super Bowl and the NBA All Star Weekend."

"Our objective in this process is to identify a partner city that can work with us to present a compelling bid to the International Olympic Committee and that has the right alignment of political, business, and community leadership," the committee's letter stated.

"Do I think Memphis is seriously on their radar screen?" asked Convention & Visitors Bureau President Kevin Kane.  "No. But they did send a letter to Mayor Wharton and Mayor Wharton will respond."

Kane said Memphis is nowhere close to having the kind of infrastructure needed to host the Olympics.

However, he and Stevens said Olympic trials may be a more realistic possibility.

"The smaller events, yes, we could possibly host the Olympic trials," said Stevens.  "But the Olympic games? We got a lot of work to do."

Nashville was among the other cities to receive a letter from the U.S. Olympic Committee.
