Fort Smith man pleads not guilty to killing aunt

FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - A 19-year-old Fort Smith man has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder in the shooting death of his aunt.

The Southwest Times Record reports Thursday ( ) that Dustin Trowbridge entered the plea Wednesday in Sebastian County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say Trowbridge shot 25-year-old Rita Jackalynne Anderson to death at her home on Feb. 13 then stole a pickup truck from Anderson's boyfriend. Trowbridge says he was only trying to scare Anderson and that the gun accidentally went off after he waved it in her face and she tried to slap it away.

Anderson is also charged with theft of property and pleaded not guilty to that count as well. He faces a possible 50 years in prison if convicted on both counts.
