SEC SOFTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (Feb. 18 – Feb. 24)

SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Mel Dumezich – Texas A&M

P/INF  • Sr. • Whiting, Ind.

Dumezich registered a 4-0 record on the mound last week and helped the Aggies get off to a program-best 17-0 start. The senior totaled 22 strikeouts, issued just one walk and gave up no earned runs. Dumezich also threw her career-first no-hitter vs. Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 20 and added a second no-hitter vs. Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 24. At the plate, Dumezich posted a .500 batting average with a HR, nine hits, seven RBIs, five doubles and five runs.

SEC CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Chelsea Thomas – Missouri

Sr. • Pleasantville, Iowa

Thomas broke her previous career-best at Mizzou with 19 strikeouts (12.0 IP) while going the distance in the Tigers' 4-3 win over No. 5 Florida in extra innings. She pitched the game after battling food poisoning the day before and had several key plays, including two strikeouts and a groundout in the top of the 12th inning to get the Tigers back to the bats. Thomas did not surrender an earned run to the Gator squad, keeping her season ERA at 0.25, and struck out 1.42 batters per inning for the week.

SEC CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Alison Owen – Mississippi State

R-Jr. • Newnan, Ga.

Owen went 2-0 last week with two complete-game shutouts, 31 strikeouts, one walk, zero runs allowed and three hits given up. She broke the 15-year-old school record with 15Ks Saturday vs. Wichita State and followed that performance with a 16 strikeout outing vs. SIU-Edwardsville. The career-high 16 strikeouts are the most by a SEC pitcher in 2013 in a regulation game (seven innings). Owen held opponents to a .067 batting average last week and leads the SEC in opponent batting average (.076), strikeouts per seven innings (11.4) and fewest walks allowed (1).

SEC FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK

Haylie McCleney – Alabama

OF • Morris, Ala.

For the third straight week, freshman Haylie McCleney led the team in hits and runs scored. McCleney batted .611 (11-for-18) with nine runs, two doubles, a home run, nine RBIs and four stolen bases. She had four multi-hit performances in the six-game week, including three games with three hits. McCleney scored at least one run and reached base in all but one game and was named the Easton Bama Bash Tournament MVP for her efforts.
