Kennett Secures Money Toward Sheryl Crow "Aquatic Center"

AUGUST 5, 2004 - Posted at 9:36 a.m. CDT

KENNETT, MO - The town of Kennett has been awarded a $250,000 grant to prepare a downtown site for the Sheryl Crow Community Aquatic Center.

The Grammy-winning singer pledged last fall to help her hometown in southeast Missouri put in a new pool just off the town square.  The community had a pool when Crow was a child where she liked to swim.

Details about her financial commitment have not been disclosed.

Kennett voters have defeated several attempts over the past decade to finance a new pool.  Town officials previously said they would seek economic development funds to help with the work.

Chamber of Commerce director Jan McElwrath says the Community Development Block Grant will fund demolition of the old swimming pool and site preparation.  She says demolition could begin in about six weeks.
