JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – People all over Region 8 danced up a storm on Saturday evening as part of an event to connect them with their southern roots.
Mayor Harold Perrin officially named this weekend "Rockabilly Weekend", and Arkansas State University kicked off the weekend with a very successful fundraiser.
The ASU Museum hosted the Rockabilly Boogiefest to celebrate the Rockabilly history in Northeast Arkansas and to raise money for a future Rockabilly exhibition.
Dr. Marti Allen is the Museum's Director, coordinated this event, and feels that people should be more open to knowing the musical roots in Arkansas.
"Once people are aware of how important rockabilly is to their heritage they will have a sense of pride and place for being from Northeast Arkansas", says Dr. Allen.
Dr. Allen says the goal is to have the exhibition by the year 2016.
Nearly 600 people were at Saturday night's event. The audience had a great time dancing while the musicians played.
The Museum's Rockabilly Boogiefest line-up included Narvel Felts, Sonny Burgess, the Legendary Pacers, Stan Perkins, and The Stunning Cunning Band-all acclaimed regional names.
Terry Wood was the master of ceremonies.
