Jonesboro Landfill Debate Heating Up

JONESBORO, AR - Debate over where to put the garbage in Jonesboro is to take place later this week.

The city council and the county waste disposal will discuss how Jonesboro can save $4.5 million over the next seven years.  That may justify abandoning a new landfill and instead sending waste to an existing facility south of the city.

Alderman Chris Moore says the city could save money if it pays the county to take non-hazardous, inert waste and items that break down slowly.

However, Mayor Hubert Brodell said he doesn't believe the city would be better off taking its non-hazardous waste to the county.  He said he was concerned about the safety of transporting waste out of town.

Brodell said he also doesn't believe the city has accurate figures on how much it would cost to develop the new landfill or how long it would last.  He said he has asked Northstar Engineering of Bentonville, the consulting firm that designed the planned new landfill, for updated numbers.
