Paragould PD warns of phone scam involving “relatives”

Posted: Updated:

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) – The Paragould Police Department has announced another phone scam being reported by residents involving there "relatives".

According to a department news release, the caller identifies themselves as a grandson or granddaughter in trouble with the law in a foreign country. The caller then asks the victim to send money to post "bail". Other calls asking for money may mention hotel bills needing to be paid or claims by foreign consulates about a family member in trouble.

Police note these scams are unique because the caller knows the names of the victim's family such as uncles, aunts and other family members to sound more believable.

Do not send money to the caller. Police suggest hanging up the phone and contacting the family member directly to check their whereabouts.

Call local law enforcement if you have concerns about calls such as these.
