HOT SPRINGS, AR (KAIT) - Day two of the Sun Belt Basketball Tournament featured a press conference with commissioner Karl Benson. The following are quotes and other details mentioned in the presser.
Benson met with university presidents and chancellors today. "Our goal now is to reestablish the 10/12 model (10 football members/12 hoops & other sports members). Within the next 30 days we will be able to establish the structure. We want to be selective, we want to make the right decision."
The commissioner said that during today's meeting of presidents and chancellors, "there was no decision today to extend invitations to any schools." Benson said that the majority of schools in the pool of prospective members are from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The commissioner also stated that New Mexico State and Idaho are in the pool.
This weekend also marks the final Sun Belt Basketball Tournament in Hot Springs. Next year's event will be held at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans. Benson said "we have not determined if it will be a 8-team or 10-team tournament." Unlike the dual court setup in Hot Springs, all games in the 2014 tourney will be on the Lakefront Arena floor.
