From Arkansas State University
The Arkansas State men's golf team turned in its best round this spring Monday at the Jackrabbit Invitational, shooting a first-round 297 to complete the 54-hole tournament's first day tied for ninth place among 14 teams.
The Red Wolves' 297 shot on the Primm Valley Golf Club's Desert course was their best since recording a third-round 296 at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate back in October. A-State is tied with Youngstown State and Illinois State and is within nine strokes of third-place South Dakota State. Air Force leads the field with a 276, while Idaho is second with a 278.
The Red Wolves were led by Easton Key, who carded a 72 to finish the opening round tied for 18th place. The junior's score was his best this spring, and he is looking for his second top-20 finish of the year.
Tied for 30th place, freshman Seth Garner posted a 74, his second-best score this year, to end the day tied for 30th place. Also competing for the Red Wolves, Matt Howton is tied for 39th place with a 75, Chance Holden tied for 53rd place with a 76 and Sean Brock tied for 63rd with a 78.
The tournament's second round was suspended due to darkness, but will resume Tuesday morning and will be followed by third and final round.
