JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) – Arkansas State University's Sharika Nelvis can now claim another All-America honor to her impressive list of awards as the junior was tabbed a second-team selection by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) following her performance at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend (March 8-9) in Fayetteville, Ark.
The 2013 All-America Indoor Track and Field All-Americans for NCAA Division I were announced by the USTFCCCA this Monday (March 11).
Nelvis, who was among 266 female student-athletes to claim USTFCCCA accolades for the 2013 indoor track season, represented Arkansas State at the national meet with a 12th-place showing in the 200-meters and a 16th-place long jump performance.
First-team All-America honors were bestowed upon those athletes who placed among the top eight finishers in an event or were a member of an eight-person final at the 2013 NCAA-I Indoor Track Championships. Those individuals finishing between ninth and 16th place attained second-team laurels while 11 other men and nine women garnered honorable mention honors. USTFCCA membership by a program is required to earn All-America awards.
The 2013 Sun Belt Conference's (SBC) Most Outstanding Women's Indoor Track Athlete, Nelvis posted an 11th-place and personal career-best fastest time of 23.53 in the 200-meter preliminaries and missed by .22 to be among the top eight sprinters to qualify for finals. Nelvis, who was the top scorer at the 2013 SBC Women's Indoor Championships (Feb. 24-25) and helped the Red Wolves to a conference title, took 16th place in the long jump with a distance of 5.72 meters.
A 2013 All-SBC First-Team selection, Nelvis claimed top individual honors in four events at this season's conference indoor meet in Jonesboro, Ark.
Nelvis is now a three-time All-American after earning second-team plaudits in both the 2012 Indoor and Outdoor Track seasons. A season ago, she recorded a ninth-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2012 Indoor Championships (March 9-10) in Nampa, Idaho.
The Red Wolves will now prepare for their 2013 outdoor season, which starts March 22-23 with the LSU Tiger Relays in Baton Rouge, La.
