Black smoke from chapel chimney: No pope yet

Posted: Updated:

VATICAN CITY (AP) - Cardinals in the Vatican's Sistine Chapel face a second day of voting to elect a new pope.

Plumes of black smoke poured from the chapel's chimney on Tuesday, signaling the 115 electors had failed on their first attempt to find a leader for the world's 1.2 billion Catholics.

The cardinals can now vote up to four times each day, with their conclave continuing until two-thirds of them agree on who should succeed the retired Pope Benedict XVI.

New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan this week expressed optimism that the election would be wrapped up quickly. His spokesman says Dolan wrote a letter to New York priests, saying: "My guess is that we'd have a new Successor of St. Peter by Thursday evening."

But Chicago Cardinal Francis George, according to his spokeswoman, suggested that the cardinals may still be meeting by Saturday, when conclave rules require them to take a break and spend some time in prayer before resuming voting.
