BEIJING (AP) - Post-communist China may be reaping the fruits of godless capitalism.

The country's new leaders face public outrage over smog-choked cities, filthy rivers and tainted products.

Nearly 6,000 dead pigs have been retrieved from a river flowing into Shanghai this month following police campaigns to curb the illicit trade in pork from diseased pigs. Beijing-based writer Li Mingsheng calls it a moral problem, writing that, "What's been polluted is not only Shanghai's river water but also the spirit of our country people."

In Washington last month, the Rev. Rick Warren said he has visited China and warned its leaders that capitalism without Christianity results in reckless greed that disregards customers, employees and neighbors.

The evangelical leader said he told them that capitalism without religious freedom is like a flower that dies when it's cut off from its roots.
