Historic German fighter jet makes tour debut in ETX

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

Dozens gathered at Tyler's Historical Aviation Memorial Museum to see history land at the airport.

The Wings of Freedom Tour is at the museum through Saturday showcasing a German ME-262, P-51 Mustang, B-17 Flying Fortress and a B-24 Liberator.

The ME-262, which made its first appearance in battle near the end of World War II, made its tour debut in Tyler.

"Tyler is the very first show stop we have made of the ME-262," Frank Romaglia, from the Collings Foundation, said. "It is the first jet fighter and during World War II - luckily for us, it didn't enter until the last few months of the war."

Romaglia said the jet flew faster than any aircraft the Allies had during WWII.

Several veterans were at the tour's stop in Tyler to see the aircraft land. David Gary flew B-52s in Vietnam and had a personal connection to the World War II aircraft.

"My Dad was in World War II, so he was in aerial photography, so I'm still interested in the World War II aircraft," he said.

The tour gives people of any age an up-close look at four historic jets.

"To see and hear these airplanes flying, that brings this sense of history much more alive than to just see them on a flag pole or a museum," Romaglia said.

The tour continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
