IZARD COUNTY (KAIT) - A shooting investigation lands an Izard County man in jail after police discover illegal drug items.

Police charged 47-year-old Dennis P. Lawton with five felony drug related charges and four misdemeanor drug related charges.  The felony charges include possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, simultaneous possession of drugs and firearms, possession of a defaced firearm, and furnishing prohibited articles.

Lawton was initially arrested after Izard County deputies were dispatched to 3413 Arkansas Highway 56 the night of March 12 regarding a shooting.

Upon arrival, it was determined that a male victim had been shot in the upper thigh with a .45 caliber handgun. The victim was transported to a Little Rock hospital by air ambulance. During the course of the investigation, a search warrant was executed and the drug items were discovered.

Lawton posted a $25,000 bond on March 15.

Sheriff Tate Lawrence says the investigative information related to the shooting has been provided to the 16th Judicial Prosecutor Don McSpadden for possible charges.
