NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – Two Newport men have been arrested during an investigation into a shooting on Monday night.

According to the Newport Police Department, officers were called to Beech Street in reference to a suspicious person. A man was found at Laurel Street who turned out to be the victim of a shooting.

Police say Marvin Hoggan told officers he had been at his home on Leona Street when Leotis Gist Jr. and Nico Cox came inside to confront him about a previous dispute.

Hoggan claims Cox told Gist to shoot the him, and then Gist fired three times with a 9MM handgun, according to police.

Police say Hoggan was hit in the buttocks and a bullet "exited his groin area" during the shooting. He was taken to a local hospital then transferred to a Little Rock hospital. Hoggan's injuries are not expected to be life-threatening, according to police.

On Tuesday, Gist and Cox were arrested. Bond was set at $150,000 each on Wednesday.

Both men will appear in Jackson County Circuit Court on April 22.
