JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Warmer weather seems likes it's just around the corner, but before you head out to a lake there's a class you need to know about.

The Arkansas Game and Fish held a boating safety course at the Crowley's Ridge Nature Center in Jonesboro.

Chuck Long is the Regional Education Coordinator and he says there are a number of things you need to be aware of when you hit the water.

"Wearing a life jacket will definitely save your life, save your kids life.  That's the most important thing.  Number two; just pay attention when you're out there.  Realize what's going on around you."

He advises to never take a lake for granted no matter how familiar you are with it, always be prepared.

According to Long, if you were born in 1986 or later, you must take a boating safety education course for any type of boat.
