JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – A Craighead County man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for beating his girlfriend and putting a gun to her head.

According to Second Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington, Steven Honeycutt was sentenced to 50 years in prison Thursday on charges of first degree battery and possession of a firearm by certain persons.

In September 2011, police say Honeycutt beat his girlfriend and then pointed a sawed-off shotgun in her face and pulled the trigger. The gun misfired.

Police say Honeycutt made the woman look into the gun at the primer to see how close she came to dying.

The woman suffered numerous bruises, cuts, broken ribs, and a collapsed lung.

When police searched Honeycutt's home, they found spent shotgun shells.

"Mr. Honeycutt will either be imprisoned or under the supervision of a parole officer for most of his remaining natural life," said Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ellington.

Honeycutt's most recent run in with the law was in March 2013, when Honeycutt was driving a truck on KAIT Road, and was stopped for expired tags.

During the stop, Honeycutt got out of the truck after Deputy Womack told him to get back into the truck. Womack told investigators once Honeycutt got out of the truck, he recognized him from previous incidents.

The incident report states Honeycutt reached back into the truck for something, raised it to his breast height, and Deputy Womack fired hitting Honeycutt in the left arm.

Evidence shows the object was a cell phone.

After the shooting Deputy Womack moved Honeycutt to the rear of the truck and began medical treatment to stop blood loss until an ambulance could arrive.

In April, Ellington says Womack was justified in the shooting.

Deputy Womack stated that he knew Honeycutt was out on bond for aggravated assault, attempted capital murder, had been shot before by deputies while serving a search warrant when he reached for an officer's gun, had chased Honeycutt on foot from a previous incident, and that Honeycutt had threatened to kill a police officer if he got out on bond.

Ellington says for those reasons, and the evidence gathered by Arkansas State Police, that he would not file charges against Deputy Womack.

Ellington also says the evidence matched the dash-cam video in Deputy Womack's cruiser.
