Police: Fetus found at sewer pumping station

INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Police are investigating after a fetus was found at a sewer pumping station Saturday morning.

Independence police said they got a call about 8:30 a.m. from a city employee who routinely inspects the sewer pumping station located near Dickinson and Mayes Road. The employee told police he found what appeared to be a human fetus in the sewer treatment plant.

Detectives and a medical examiner arrived on scene and the examiner said it appears the fetus was in the first trimester.

Police said the area where the discovery was made receives sewer waste from thousands of locations so it will be difficult to tell where it came from.

While the medical examiner's office will continue to investigate, police said there are no signs of foul play at this time.

If anyone has information regarding the incident, they are asked to call the Independence Police Department Detective Unit at 816-325-7330.
