2013 ASU Football spring camp continues

From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State University football team, fresh off its first full-contact spring scrimmage last Saturday, conducted its eighth practice of the spring season this Monday (April 1) under the Liberty Bank Stadium lights with an emphasis not only on implementing schemes on both sides of the ball, but also correcting mistakes from the Red Wolves' initial scrimmage.

ASU spent two-and-half hours on the field, starting with individual drills such as ball protection and moving onto to passing and blocking drills.  The majority of the practice was spent on installing additional offensive and defensive schemes.

With eight practices now completed this spring, first-year ASU coach Bryan Harsin believes the Red Wolves have progressed and reached a current level expected from the coaching staff at this stage of the spring season.

"We're right about where we should be," said Harsin.  "Our goal this week is to correct the mistakes made in our first scrimmage.  We're going to continue putting in the last portions of our offense and defense with the 1-2-3 schemes we have along with a few little wrinkles.

"I want us to see mistakes from our previous scrimmage not happen in this one (second scrimmage).  We will make new mistakes just so there not the ones we've made before," added Harsin.

This Monday night's practice was focused on minimizing mistakes and the continuation of installing new facets, particularly on offense.

"I was pleased with our effort tonight and both sides got after it," said Harsin.  "Offensively, there's still some thinking and processing going on there.  Our guys are still rolling with the ups and downs.  Defensively, you have those players who were in the system last year and started, so they're getting into the plays quicker and have a little bit more details down right now.  It's good to see and it's want you to want to see from them."

The Red Wolves return to the field for their ninth practice this Wednesday (April 3) at 3:45 p.m. (CT) before holding their second scrimmage this Friday (April 5) at ASU's Liberty Bank Stadium, starting at 7 p.m. (CT).  The "Friday Night Lights – Red Wolves Edition" scrimmage is open to the public free of charge and all high school coaches, players, and spirit squads are encouraged to attend and proudly display their respective school colors.

Arkansas State's annual Spring Game will take place Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. (CT) followed by the Red Wolves' final spring-camp practice on Monday, April 15, at 6 p.m. (CT).
