ASU Golf ends Red Wolves Intercollegiate in sixth place

From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State men's golf team shot a combined 881, matching its second lowest three-round score this season, at the 17th annual Red Wolves Intercollegiate, wrapping up its home tournament Tuesday at RidgePointe County Club in sixth place out of 20 teams.

Eleven A-State golfers were competing in the field made up 112 players, and the Red Wolves had a pair of squads competing. ASU's second team recorded a 915 to finish in 15th place.

Arkansas State was led by three players finishing among the top-20 individual leaders with junior Chance Holden, sophomore Christian Helmbold and freshman Seth Garner all tying for 14th place with a 219 total. Garner and Helmbold both collected their top finish of the season, while Holden matched his second best.

A-State's best round, a 292 posted Monday to open the tournament, put it in second place, but the Red Wolves dropped to fifth place by the end of the day despite adding just one stroke on to that total for the second 18 holes. Led by a 71 from Holden on the final day, ASU recorded a 296 that dropped it one additional spot in the final standings.

"We did some good things (at our tournament), but we need to become more consistent," said ASU head coach Steve Johnson. "I think each round we were really only one good score away from playing really well. We've got to learn to put multiple good rounds together, and that is a sign of a little inexperience and something we will continue to work on."

The Red Wolves came in only one stroke behind fifth-place UALR and within three strokes of third-place Southern Illinois. Austin Peay State claimed the championship with an 857, while Samford finished runner-up with an 872.

In addition to Holden and Garner, Wessel Zwiegers helped the Red Wolves to their second-best finish of the year by finishing tied for 26th with a 222. Also competing for the A-State team finishing sixth, Matt Howton ended the tournament tied for 36th place with a 224, which included a final-round 72 that was his best score of the tournament. Easton Key finished tied for 60th place with a 229.

The Red Wolves' squad that finished 15th was led by Helmbold, but also included Sean Brock, Tommy Eagan, Eli Mattioli and Chris Bruchhaussen. Brock placed tied for 60th, Eagan and Mattioli tied for 84th and Bruchhausen 106th. Alex Hewitt competed as an individual and finished tied for 60th place along with Brock.

ASU returns to action at the Old Waverly Intercollegiate, set for April 8-9 in West Point, Miss.
