OSCEOLA -- Osceola is competing with two other cities to be the building site for a new steel mill company.  But what does that mean for an economic impact this across Region 8?

Osceola hopes to see a new $700,000 dollar steel mill on the horizon.  Steelcorr is considering Mississippi County as a site for this new project.  Officials say characteristics in the community like transportation outlets and work ethic sparked economic growth in the area.

Mississippi County Judge Steve McGuire said, "All of those things coming together are I think coming into fruition, and the prospects are certainly better than they have been in the past."

This new prospect for the area is expected to create nearly 450 new jobs.  McGuire says even the folks who have to commute to and from work daily will realize these jobs are worth the few extra miles.

McGuire said, "50, 60, 70 thousand dollars will have a significant impact on anyone's economy."

If Osceola is chosen to be new site for the steel mill, McGuire said it would make Mississippi County the number one steel-producing county in the United States.

"People like to do business where business is being done," said McGuire.

Denso's decision last year to locate in Mississippi County was the largest single job creator of any county in the state of Arkansas with 500 jobs.

"The future certainly looks bright with the addition of these new industrial prospects," said McGuire.

And he hopes the Steel Company will recognize the team effort between the city's existing industries and new developments as well.

"We should anticipate the creation of additional jobs from the ancillary industries that come in and support the main industries," said McGuire.

Southern Louisiana and Southern Missouri are the other two areas vying for this new development site.
