LORIS, SC (WMBF) - Imagine waking up in the middle of the night to masked intruders armed with guns looking for money.

That happened to one Loris family and on this week's "Horry County's Most Wanted" they shared the ordeal with WMBF News' Theo Hayes in the hopes of getting the suspects off the streets.

"My wife woke me up and said 'George it sounds like somebody is breaking in the front door," recalled George Hemingway. "They shoved me into the wall and hollered ‘Lay down, lay down big fella.'"

Seventy-year-old George Hemingway and his wife Shirley have lived in this home on Green Sea Road in Loris for years.

George used to own and operate a popular nightclub on the property and believes the men that broke into his home wanted some of his hard-earned cash, but Hemingway explained how he fought back using a gun he keeps for protection.

"Now you have to come by me to get past, and I have the gun so I fired a shot and it hit the wall, and he ran and jumped out the glass window right there," he explained.

Four suspects with shirts over their face broke into the couple's home using a crowbar just after 1 a.m. on a May day in 2010. The men were armed and came in yelling.

"They come in hollering this is the FBI and the police and they came in shooting," Hemingway said.

He was shot in the leg during the scuffle, but the men got away. Luckily, 33-year-old John Thomas Vaughn of Wilmington North Carolina left behind a trail of crucial DNA

"There was a trail of blood, so evidently I shot him, or he got cut on the glass," Hemingway said.

Although the home invasion happened nearly three years ago, the situation still haunts the family.

"It's really, really scary," Hemingway said. "You can't imagine when you don't feel safe in your own house."

Today the family is grateful they're alive and George says it's changed his life.

"Jesus is the light of my life,' he said. "It used to be all about King George but now it's about King Jesus."

John Thomas Vaughn is wanted by the Horry County Sheriff's Office for assault and battery with intent to kill, kidnapping, and first degree burglary.

If you've seen Vaughn or know who he is, call the sheriff's office immediately before the Hemingway's story becomes someone else's.
