ASU Field Event Athletes productive at SEMO's Joey Haines Invitational

From Arkansas State University

The Arkansas State University outdoor track and field teams gained a little momentum with some quality performances in field events at this weekend's (April 5-6) non-scoring Southeast Missouri State's (SEMO) 32nd annual Joey Haines Invitational, held at the Abe Stuber Track & Field Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

"This weekend we sent only the throwers to SEMO," said ASU head coach Jim Patchell. "SEMO always has quality competition in the throwing events.  Chris Nicasio threw a personal best in the hammer and secured a trip to the regionals at the end of May.  Coach (Matt) Kraft does a great job with the throws group which had a solid competition."

Chris Nicasio had the top mark for ASU men's team in the hammer throw as the junior qualified for the 2013 NCAA West Regional, which will be held May 23-25 in Austin, Texas.  Nicasio's first-place toss of 205-08 (62.70m) in the hammer not only represented a personal career best and is tops in the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) this outdoor season, but presently ranks ninth on the 2013 outdoor West Region leaders list.

Senior Corwin Pace led the Red Wolves in the discus with a fourth-place showing at 165-09 (50.52m), which represents the SBC's fourth-longest distance and 56th-best in the region this spring.  Chris Nicasio earned fifth-place honors with a throw of 163-02 (49.73m) and junior Richard Chavez claimed seventh place as a result of a 161-11 (49.35m) effort.  Junior Tyler Lingo's throw of 160-07 (48.94) proved worthy of eighth place.

In the shot put, Tyler Lingo garnered ninth place following a toss of 51-01 (15.57m) while Richard Chavez and ChrisNicasio placed 10th and 11th, respectively.  Chavez posted a throw of 50-10 (15.49m) while Nicasio tallied a 49-09.75 (15.18) distance in the field event finals.

The ASU women's squad was led by senior Julia Agawu, who competed well by taking second in the discus and eighth in the shot put.  Agawu had a throw of 156-10 (47.80m) in the discus, which is the second highest mark in the conference to date this season.  She would also generate an eighth-place performance of 43-11.75 (13.40m) in the shot put.  Junior Kim Ludick (Raath) finished two places behind Agawu in the shot put by generating a 42-05.50 (12.94m) effort.

The Joey Haines Invitational, which is named in honor of SEMO's retired coach, featured athletes competing from Southern Illinois, SIU-Edwardsville, Northern Iowa along with host SEMO and Arkansas State.

Up next for the Red Wolves is the Tennessee Sea Ray Relays next weekend, April12-13 in Knoxville, Tenn., for the ASU throwers while the remaining A-Stateteam members will take part in the Ole Miss Invitational, April 13-14, in Oxford, Miss.
