NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A beloved speech and debate coach at Montgomery Bell Academy is being remembered for his lifetime of education that reached far beyond Nashville.

Billy Tate died Saturday morning of a heart attack.

Tate taught for 30 years at MBA, helping its debate program become one of the best in the country, and served as president of the National Forensics League for 16 years.

"He loved this school, and he loved what he did. He would talk excitedly about teaching seventh-graders speech. And I've heard from a number of their families how he was their favorite teacher," said MBA Headmaster Brad Gioia. "Each year, 20 to 30 students come back, who've finished MBA more than five or 10 years ago, simply to help him with the program. And they do it because of their love for him."

The visitation and funeral for Tate is set for Friday in Selma, AL.

MBA plans to hold a memorial service on Sunday.
