ATLANTA, GA (KAIT) - The Louisville Cardinals are the champions of college basketball after topping 4 seed Michigan 82-76 on Saturday night.
The Cardinals trailed for the majority of the 1st half but were able to use speed and defense in the 2nd half to overtake the Wolverines and close out the game.
Louisville entered the title game as the 1 seed and won the championship on the same day Head Coach Rick Pitino found out he would be inducted into the James Naismith Hall of Fame.
Pitino's Cardinals fell short of title hopes last season after they lost to eventual National Champ and in-state rivals Kentucky.
The victory is also is sweet for the team that felt heartbreak after losing defender Kevin Ware to a gruesome leg injury last week. Ware was on the sidelines for the game and celebrated with the team after the final buzzer sounded marking the title for the Cardinals.
Pitino also had a big day Monday receiving a 2.7 million dollar bonus from three years of deferred bonuses. Since the Cardinals won, he'll get another $150,000, pushing his earnings over $6 million this season.
Pitino was the only coach in NCAA history to lead 3 different teams to the Final Four.
