From Arkansas State University
The Arkansas State men's golf team completed play at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship Tuesday with its best round of the two-day tournament, recording a 305 for the final 18 holes to give it a combined 929 and 14th-place finish.
The Red Wolves opened play at the Old Waverly Golf Club Monday with a 315 and 309 for the first and second rounds, respectively. Despite lowering its score each round and showing a 10-stroke improvement between its first and third rounds, A-State remained in 14th place throughout the tournament.
Two ASU golfer posted their best score in the final round, including junior Chance Holden with a 75 and freshman Seth Garner with a 73. Their final-round results helped both players climb four places in the final standings, and Garner's 73 was the lowest score of the tournament by an A-State player.
Holden actually lowered his score each round, posting a 79 in Monday's early round and a 77 in the second as well. He finished tied for 56th place alongside teammate Wessel Zwiegers to lead the Red Wolves. Zwiegers, a senior, shot a 79-75-77 as he and Holden both recorded a combined 231.
Following Holden and Zwiegers, Garner ended the tournament tied for 63rd place with a combined 232 that also included an 80 and 79 in addition to his final-round 73. Also competing for the Red Wolves, Matt Howton finished 71st with a 238 (80-78-80) and Christian Helmbold 73rd with a 242 (77-83-82).
Mississippi State and UAB both recorded a combined 867, but the Bulldogs won a sudden-death tiebreaker to claim the tournament championship. South Alabama finished third with an 876.
The tournament was the Red Wolves last before it will compete in the Sun Belt Conference Championships, set for April 22-24 in Muscle Shoals, Ala.
