ASU's Chris Nicasio named Sun Belt Outdoor Track Men's Athlete of the Week

JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Junior Chris Nicasio of the Arkansas State University has been chosen as this week's (April 10) Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Outdoor Track Men's Field Athlete of the Week as released this Wednesday (April 10) by the conference.

Nicasio won the hammer throw event at last weekend's (April 5-6) Southeast Missouri State's (SEMO) Joey Haines Invitational with a personal career-best performance of
205-08 (62.70m) and as the mark qualified him for 2013 NCAA West Regionals to be held May 23-25 in Austin, Texas.  A season ago (May 24-26), Nicasio competed in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Region Preliminaries in Austin, Texas and placed 42nd overall with a 183-02.42 (55.84m) throw.

Nicasio's toss in the hammer throw is presently tops among the conference outdoor leaders and represents the 10th-best effort in the NCAA West Region this spring to date. Heclaimed fifth-place honors in the discus with a throw of 163-02 (49.74m) and garnered 11th place in the shot put event as a result of a 49-09.75 (15.18m) performance.

The weekly conference honors represents the first in Nicasio's outdoor career and the second time this 2012-13 season for the A-State field athlete.  Nicasio was honored as the Sun Belt Conference Men's Indoor Track Field Athlete of the Week (Jan. 23) following a personal career-best 64-00.5 (19.52m) toss in the weight throw at the Eastern Illinois John Craft Invitational (Jan. 19).

With Nicasio's selection, Arkansas State has now been recognized twice this outdoor campaign with weekly conference honors.  Junior Kristina Aubert was named the SBC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week earlier this season (March 27).

Nicasio and his fellow ASU throwers will be competing in the 47th annual Sea Ray Relays this weekend (April 11-13) in Knoxville, Tenn.  The meet, which is being hosted by the University of Tennessee, will be held at UT's Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium.
