Madison woman accidentally shot by future son-in-law

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Madison woman is fighting for her life after police said she was shot by her future son-in-law late Wednesday night.

The future son-in-law said he fired the gun by accident, and the victim's husband backed up his story.

The 42-year-old woman was shot in the abdomen inside her own home in the 600 block of Cheron Drive around 10:16 p.m.

She was transported from Skyline Medical Center to Vanderbilt Medical Center for further treatment.

The woman is in critical condition, but doctors said they believe she'll survive.

Police said they'll have to finish their investigation before they can determine if the evidence supports the son-in-law's story.

The investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
