NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A 17-year-old student from Pearl-Cohn High School was killed just as he left home Thursday morning to catch a school bus.

The shooting occurred at 6:40 a.m. just north of downtown in the 1900 block of 10th Avenue North.

The victim was identified as Johnathan Johnson, who was the second youngest of five children.

His older brother, Rory, said Johnathan was a good student, basketball player and a big Boston Celtics fan.

Rory said Johnathan spent the last night of his life doing laundry with his stepdad and making his family laugh.

"Today the Pearl-Cohn family lost one of our own. We had a student who was fatally shot in the community this morning," said Pearl-Cohn principal Sonia Stewart in a written statement. "The student was a young man who was friendly, kind and had a bright future.

"Our school community is responding to the needs of our students with grief counseling and additional support. The family of the victim has asked that their privacy be respected. I would like to thank Metro School Security, support staff, and local law enforcement for the quick response and support of our students as we grieve this loss."

Police search for suspect

Investigators are searching for Eric L. Goodner, 17, in connection with the shooting.

Goodner is last known to have lived on 26th Avenue North. He last attended Pearl-Cohn High School on Feb. 13.

Before shooting Johnson, witnesses said Goodner was sitting on steps leading to a vacant lot. When he saw Johnson, he walked up to him, shot him more than once and fled the area on foot.

Police are asking the public to be on the lookout for Goodner, who is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Investigators do not yet know the motive for the shooting.
