Future Nashville rapid transit system dubbed 'The Amp'

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Nashville is one step closer to the arrival of its new rapid transit bus project, and it now has a new name.

City officials met Thursday to review plans for the proposed East-West connector that will now be called "The Amp" in a nod to Music City's history.

The buses would run along an eight-mile corridor stretching from the Five Points area in east Nashville to the White Bridge Road area in west Nashville.

Planners say it will cut commuters' travel time in half and bring a big boost to local businesses.

"This type of investment will reap untold economic development along this corridor - going beyond just West End, going on both sides of the street. And I think it keeps the city competitive," said Mayor Karl Dean.

Officials said the project will cost $174 million, and the city of Nashville would be responsible for $59 million of that.

The Amp is projected to open in 2016.
