Kyria Seymour of Jonesboro died Saturday, April 19, at LeBonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. A memorial fund has been created for an 11-year-old girl who died after she became trapped beneath a pipe in a water-filled ditch for 20 minutes.
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville mother says her troubled teen was able to leave school after someone pretending to be a parent checked her out of class.

Even though 16-year-old Katy Mason's been missing since last Friday, her mother Betty Mason said she got a call from her daughter Monday. While Katy claimed she was safe then, her mother said she's terrified she hasn't heard anything from her in the days since.

"It is the worst nightmare that any parent could ever, ever go through," said Mason. "Are they safe? You feel so helpless."

Mason said she found out last Friday someone called and checked out Katy from her class at Hillsboro High.

"I asked, 'which one of her parents signed her out?'" said Mason. "They told me it was a phone call from her mother. I said, 'no, I am her mother. Someone has impersonated me.'"

Mason said because Katy had problems skipping class, she had already conducted meetings with the school to explain her daughter could not leave without a parent signature.

"What was the security question?'" asked Mason, referring to her conversation with the school. "What made you feel safe from a phone call to let this child leave your school? They said, 'we asked what Katy's birthday was.' You can go on Facebook and find out anybody's birthday."

Metro school representatives said they legally can't discuss student cases but an investigation has started to see if any wrong steps were taken.

Mason said her daughter is likely with her 22-year-old boyfriend who recently breached an order of protection the parents filed against him.

Police said the girl was last spotted Friday afternoon leaving the family's second home on Valley Brook Place, getting into a 1994 black Volvo with the Tennessee tag, 323MLG.

"We're here," said Mason. "We're waiting on her, and I know she's going to be home soon. I love her."
