JONESBORO, Ark. (AStateRedWolves.com) – Arkansas State women's soccer head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge announced the Red Wolves' 2013 schedule on Monday. A-State will play 18 regular-season matches in 2013, including nine home outings, 10 nonconference matches and an eight-game Sun Belt Conference slate.
The Red Wolves return seven starters and 20 letterwinners from a 2012 team that recorded an 11-8-1 overall posted and set the school top mark for most wins in a single season.
"For the first time in school history we begin a new year on the heels of a winning season," Ziyenge said. "This will be a big challenge for our 2013 team which is tasked with keeping the momentum going. The level of competition on this schedule will definitely require us to always be at our best."
ASU kicks off the 2013 slate with a home matchup against Southern Mississippi Aug. 23, followed by a trip to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State Aug. 25. The Red Wolves then travel to Central Arkansas to take on the Bears Aug. 30.
Following the two-match road swing, the squad will return home for a midweek matchup with Missouri State Tuesday, Sept. 3, and will then have a road trip to Southeast Missouri Sept. 6. A-State will host Grambling Sept. 8, and will then embark on a two-match road trip to Tulsa on Sept. 13 and Oral Roberts on Sept. 15.
The road swing will be followed by a three-match home stand beginning with Arkansas-Pine Bluff Sept. 20, Murray State Sept. 22 and the Sun Belt Conference opener against Arkansas-Little Rock Sept. 29.
The Red Wolves continue conference play with a trip to Troy on Thursday, Oct. 3, followed by a matchup with South Alabama at home Oct. 6. Arkansas State will travel to Louisiana Oct. 11-13 for a pair of matches against Louisiana-Monroe and Louisiana-Lafayette before returning to Jonesboro to take on Western Kentucky Oct. 18 and Georgia State Oct. 20 in the Red Wolves' home finale. The regular-season finale will be played Sunday, Oct. 27, at Texas State.
The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will take place Nov. 6-10 in San Marcos, Texas and will be hosted by Texas State University.
Prior to the start of the regular season the Red Wolves will play two road exhibition matches. The squad will travel to Memphis on Wednesday, Aug. 14 followed by an Aug. 16 preseason match at Saint Louis.
A-State returns 70 percent of its scoring from the 2012 season as the Red Wolves notched a school-record 113 points, a school-record 41 goals, and were one shy of tying the school-record of 32 assists. The squad also set the school for most wins at home with six and the longest winning streak in school history at six games as well.
