PARAGOULD, Ark. (LyonScots.com) – The Lyon College softball team used a 23-hit attack spread over two games Monday afternoon to streak past Crowley's Ridge College, as the Scots reach double-digit wins for the season with a 10-6, 11-0 sweep of the Lady Pioneers.
Savannah Graham, Amanda McCauley and Apple Filat each produced four hits in the twinbill sweep, as Lyon eclipsed the 10-win mark on the year, improving to 10-32. The Scots (4-10 AMC) will try to use the momentum as they head to Missouri for American Midwest Conference play later this week. Lyon will visit Harris-Stowe State University 6-24, 2-11 AMC) on Thursday, before taking on William Woods University (16-12, 7-5 AMC) on Friday in Fulton.
Lyon is currently in seventh place in the league chase. The top eight teams advance to the AMC Postseason Tournament. Benedictine University at Springfield (Ill.) (5-19, 3-13 AMC) is in ninth place, two games behind the Scots.
Lyon College 10, Crowley's Ridge College 6 (Game 1)
Four different Lyon College players produced two hits, while Lauren Mills picked up the complete-game victory in the circle in the Scots' 10-6 win in Game 1.
McCauley went 2-for-4 at the dish to pace the Scots' attack, driving in three runs with a double. She also scored three runs. Mills went 2-for-4, with a run, while Filat picked up a pair of singles and scored. Graham went 2-for-3, with a two-bagger, while pushing in a pair of runs and scoring once.
Haley Seger doubled and drove in two runs for Lyon, while Stephanie Haft singled, scored a run and picked up an RBI. Valerie Howell singled and scored two runs and Kelsey Goodman drove in a run and scored once with one single.
Mills (8-18) picked up the win, as she scattered 13 hits, allowing two earned runs (6 total), with a pair of strikeouts.
Samantha Blevins was the losing hurler for the Lady Pioneers, giving up 10 runs (6 earned) on 12 hits, with two strikeouts and a walk.
Lyon took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first and added three runs to the total in the third. Crowley's Ridge pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the frame, but the Scots pulled away with a four-run fourth and a one-run fifth frame.
Lyon College 11, Crowley's Ridge College 0 (Game 2)
Mills shut down the Lady Pioneers in Game 2, throwing a five-hit shutout, with five strikeouts and no walks, to improve her season mark to 9-18 in an 11-0 Lyon College win in five innings.
Once again the Scots were aggressive at the plate, blasting 11 hits, including four that went for extra bases.
Graham was a perfect 2-for-2, with a triple, three RBIs and a run scored to pace the Scots' attack. McCauley went 2-for-3, with a walk, a double, three runs scored and a run batted in. Filat produced a 2-for-4 game, with a run, Howell went 2-for-4 with two runs and another driven in and Haft doubled twice and pushed two runs across the dish. Mills added the other hit, scoring three times and driving in two teammates.
Blevins was the losing hurler for Crowley's Ridge College. She gave up 11 runs (5 earned) on 11 hits, with a strikeout and a walk.
Lyon quickly moved out in front 3-0 in the first frame and then added six runs in the second for a 9-0 lead. The Scots ended the contest early with a two-run fourth inning.
