WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Royal Courtain, his wife Cindy and their son were in Boston Monday for their very first Boston Marathon. Cindy crossed the finish line one minute before the two blasts went off in the area.

"It's something [my wife] has always wanted to do, because her dad passed away from Alzheimer's a few years ago," Courtain said. "He had run the Boston Marathon somewhat late in his life so this has always been in a lifelong dream for her to run in it and to kind of honor him."

Courtain and his family are from Chico, CA. Right now he and his family are on a trip on the east coast. About a year ago, they spent some time in Wilmington.  He said he was down the street from the finish line when the two blasts went off.

"Everybody who was in the area just kind of stopped and we weren't really sure what was going on," he explained. "Maybe it was some kind of celebration thing. None of it made sense and then the second bomb went off and everybody started running."

Courtain said as soon as he heard the explosion it took him a while before he started thinking that someone could have intentionally set them off.

"The only thing my head was thinking about was – the bombs went off. I know my wife just crossed the finish line and I have to get over there and find out where she is," said Courtain.

It took him about a half-hour until he got any word of where his wife was. Luckily, Courtain was able to find her unharmed. It took him another half-hour to walk past the finish line, where he said he saw things no one should ever have to go through.

"This event here today is going to leave a scar. It's going to take a while to recover from this," said Courtain.

He said the incident is not going to keep his family from returning to Boston. After completing the race, Cindy qualified to participate in the Boston Marathon again and they hope to return to race in the future.
