Additional Charges May Be Filed Against Gilmore Kidnapping Suspect

AUGUST 20, 2004 - Posted at 7:47 a.m. CDT

MARION, AR - Prosecutors are to take another look at the case against a woman charged with kidnapping in the disappearance of a 7-year-old girl who has now been found dead.

Patricia Ann Miles vanished Sunday.  She was found dead last night at the edge of a bean field in Mississippi County, not far from where her bicycle and shoes were found days earlier.

Family friend Jo Ann Buchanan was arrested on a kidnapping charge Monday.  Buchanan is being held in the Crittenden County jail in Marion on a $1 million bond.  Her family insists she is innocent.

Witnesses have said they saw the girl get into a van with Buchanan Sunday morning and later saw Buchanan take the girl's bicycle from the van in a rural area north of Gilmore.

Buchanan has refused to cooperate with police.  There have been some unsubstantiated reports that the girl's disappearance and probable kidnapping may have been part of a plot to extort money from her family.
