New Study To Figure Costs on Reorganizing State Government

LITTLE ROCK, AR - A new study estimates how much it would cost to reorganize the Arkansas state government.

The study follows Governor Mike Huckabee's failed attempt in 2003 to pass a proposal to reorganize 53 state agencies in ten major departments.

Huckabee said it would save taxpayers money.  But a majority of the House Education Committee balked when the governor couldn't quantify the savings up front.

Governor's office spokesman Jim Harris said Huckabee would welcome an honest attempt by the Legislature to join his efforts to streamline the operations and costs of state government.

Yesterday, a legislative panel approved the study.
