ASU 10th after 2nd round of Sun Belt Women's Golf Championship

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. ( — The Arkansas State women's golf team shot a second-round 309 Tuesday on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals, climbing one spot to ninth place in the standings at the Sun Belt Conference Championships.

The Red Wolves cut seven strokes off their 316 score posted during the tournament's opening round played Monday.  A-State moved past Western Kentucky, taking a two-stroke lead over a Lady Toppers squad that entered the second day in eighth place.  Arkansas State trails eighth-place North Texas by six strokes, while Florida International leads the 11-team field with a 585.  Middle Tennessee is currently in second place with a 591 and Troy in third with a 598.

Senior Anna Carling led A-State through its second 18 holes of competition, recording a team-best 72 that moved her up 19 places in the individual standings to tied for 32nd place.  Carling's 72 was the best single-round score by an ASU golfer at the tournament so far and was 12 strokes below her total for the opening 18 holes.

True freshman Abi Laker dropped seven places in the standings Tuesday, but is still tied for 18th place to remain among the top-25 individual leaders.  Laker, who has five top-25 finishes this season, recorded a second-round 77 after posting a 75 during the opening day of play.

Also competing for A-State, Marie Couffignal is tied for 34th place with a 157 (78-79), Jennifer Loiacano tied for 48th with a 163 (82-81) and Courtney Manning tied for 51st with a 166 (81-85).

The tournament's third and final round will be played Wednesday.
