The Arkansas State University track and field teams hope to continue their recent success as the Red Wolves travel to Nashville, Tenn.,this weekend (April 19-20) to compete in the Vanderbilt Invitational at the Vanderbilt University Track and Field Complex.
"The Vanderbilt Invitational is always a good meet," said ASU head coach Jim Patchell. "We are currently in the competition phase of training which is a little less volume and a little more intense. This time of year most of our work is done, we just need to sharpen things up and concentrate on getting some good performances."
The Vanderbilt Invite is slated to commence this Friday (April 19) at 3 p.m. (CT) with field event action, beginning with the men's long jump followed by the women's long jump. The final event for day one action is the women's 5,000-meter run, which is scheduled for an 8 p.m. (CT) start time. This Saturday's (April 20) action gets underway with the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m. (CT) and the men's competition to follow. The meet's last event is at 4 p.m. (CT) with the running of the 4x400-meter relay.
Arkansas State will go into this weekend's meet with both its men's and women's teams currently regionally ranked by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross CountryCoaches Association (USTFCCCA). The women's outdoor track squad moved up three places into eighth in this week's NCAA South Central Region with a 278.22 team score in the latest (April 16)Division I computer rankings. Texas A&M remains as the region's top ranked squad with a team score of869.06
The A-State men's track team is making its first appearance of this outdoor season as the Red Wolves climbed nine spots into a current 12th-place position with a 196.62 score. Texas continues to hold down the number one position in the South Central Region by accumulating an 844.24 score.
Following this weekend's competition, Arkansas State will host its second annual Red Wolf Open on Saturday, April 27, at the ASU Track and Field Complex in Jonesboro, Ark.
