Art show at retirement home showcase residents' work

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT- The Chateau on the Ridge Assisted Living Retirement Community hosted their first arts and crafts show Saturday featuring some of the resident's work.

The event also featured 49 booths from vendors throughout the community. Becky Loyd is a resident at Chateau on the Ridge and also had a booth at Saturday's art show.

"It's been so much fun seeing all the people come in," Loyd said.

Loyd's booth featured hand-made bracelets of various colors and styles.

"The bracelets at the other end are called Dolly and Me, we made bracelets for the little girls and a tiny bracelet for her baby," she said.

She also had bracelets with beads and friendship bracelets for teenagers. Loyd said they have been very busy over the past couple of months.

"We worked many hours on this, dropped beads on the floor and had to run around picking them up," she joked.

Loyd said she enjoys making her bracelets even when she has to chase after her beads.

"It was fun, it was tedious but it was fun," she said. Loyd said having this art show has meant a lot to the residents of Chateau.

"It shows that we can still do things, we're in an assisted living but we are not handicapped where we cant do things," she said.

She said the best part of the event is having people come by her booth and check out her bracelets.

"We like to see people enjoy looking at them," Loyd said.

Brandi Rannals is the activities director at Chateau on the Ridge and said it was important to have the arts and crafts show to keep the residents active.

"It's just a good way for them to get out of their rooms and get exposure, socialization, you know that's the key," Rannals said.

"You can get depressed and that's not good so it's just a good way to get out," she said.

Some booths featured jewelry, baby dolls, quilts even hand-made furniture.  Rannals said some of the residents had been working on their crafts for months and was looking forward to the chance to show them off to the community.
