JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - According to the study published Monday in the Journal Pediatrics parents who deny certain foods to children or pressuring them to eat all of a meal could have an adverse effect on their kids
"We never encourage parents to make their kid clean their plate we no longer like the clean your plate club," said Ascent Children's Health Service Dietician Starr Wilson.
It's been said by millions of parents for years but researchers have found that forcing your child to clean their plate, can lead to obesity in their future.
"We're the ones who are going to decide what they are going to eat and when they are going to eat. It's their choice to decide how much and that's the key for them to learn those internal cues of being full," said Wilson
If you've got picky eaters, the best way to get them to finish their meal is by giving options.
"Maybe for vegetables, do you want to have carrots or broccoli or for fruit would you like an orange or a banana? Just ways they feel like they have a say in it," said Wilson.
When it comes to the sweets and snacks kids really want, Wilson said never restrict food. Instead, allow it in moderation.
"It's good to have days where you allow fun foods, maybe one snack a day where you allow fun food," said Wilson.
