BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) – Police responded to a standoff Tuesday morning at a Batesville motel.

The incident unfolded after a sheriff's deputy located a stolen vehicle at the Economy Inn, located on E. Main Street in Batesville.

At the motel, Officer Ernie Gillihan spotted Jorge Montoya, 36, trying to get into the stolen car. Gillihan then drew his gun and approached Montoya, telling him to get on the ground.

Montoya instead jumped in the stolen vehicle, pulled a pistol from his waist band and held it to his head.

Gillihan then called in the department's crisis negotiating team as well as Arkansas State Police and every available sheriff's deputy.

Sheriff Steve Jeffery said the negotiator finally got Montoya to surrender.

"Our negotiator was fantastic talking to him," Jeffery said. "He talked to him about hunting and fishing and everything in the world to try to get him to have confidence in the negotiator. After about an hour, it worked out."

Montoya is currently being held in the Independence County Jail, where he is awaiting his first court appearance.

He is expected to be charged with theft of an automobile, a felony, and carrying a weapon, a misdemeanor.
