BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) – Police responded to a standoffTuesday morning at a Batesville motel.
The incident unfolded after a sheriff's deputy located astolen vehicle at the Economy Inn, located on E. Main Street in Batesville.
At the motel, Officer Ernie Gillihan spotted Jorge Montoya,36, trying to get into the stolen car. Gillihan then drew his gun andapproached Montoya, telling him to get on the ground.
Montoya instead jumped in the stolen vehicle, pulled apistol from his waist band and held it to his head.
Gillihan then called in the department's crisis negotiatingteam as well as Arkansas State Police and every available sheriff's deputy.
Sheriff Steve Jeffery said the negotiator finally gotMontoya to surrender.
"Our negotiator was fantastic talking to him," Jeffery said."He talked to him about hunting and fishing and everything in the world to tryto get him to have confidence in the negotiator. After about an hour, it workedout."
Montoya is currently being held in the Independence CountyJail, where he is awaiting his first court appearance.
He is expected to be charged with theft of an automobile, afelony, and carrying a weapon, a misdemeanor.
