ASU Men's Golf ends SBC Championship's second round in eighth

The Arkansas State men's golf team shot a second-round 305 Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, dropping one spot in the standings to eighth place with a combined 605 through the three-day tournament's first 36 holes.

The Red Wolves finished Monday's opening round in seventh place after recording a 300 on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at The Shoals, but tacked five strokes onto that total for the second 18 holes to leave them eight strokes behind seventh-place Louisiana-Lafayette.

Junior Easton Key led A-State in the second round with a 75 and now stands a team-best tied for 20th place with a combined 149, which also includes his 74 posted in the first round. Junior Chance Holden entered the day tied for 10th place after recording a 73 Monday, but dropped into a tie for 29th after carding a second-round 78 that pushed his two-day total to 151.

Despite matching his first-round score with another 76 turned in Tuesday, freshman Seth Garner dropped four places in the standings to tied for 32nd place with a combined 152. Wessel Zwiegers improved his score by one stroke in the second round, completing the second 18 holes with a 76. The A-State senior now stands in 39th place with a 153.

Also competing for the Red Wolves, senior Matt Howton cut nine strokes off his first-round score with a 78 posted Tuesday and remains in 54th place with a 165 total.

A-State will enter tomorrow's third and final round three strokes ahead of ninth-place Western Kentucky. Georgia State leads the 11-team field with a 581, while North Texas stands second with a 582 and South Alabama third with a 584.
