ASU releases 2013 volleyball schedule

JONESBORO, Ark. ( – The Arkansas State volleyball team announced its 2013 schedule on Wednesday, which features 10 home matches against nine conference opponents and one non-conference foe.

A-State will play four non-conference tournaments and open the season Aug. 30-31 at the University of Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Mo.  The tournament field includes host Missouri, South Dakota, Lipscomb and San Francisco.  The Red Wolves return to action in another tournament, the University of Mississippi Invitational, on Sept. 6-7 in Oxford, Miss.  Ole Miss, Kennesaw State and Georgia Southern join ASU as the tournament participants.

The third tournament of the year for Arkansas State is the Alabama Tournament set for Sept. 13-14.  Joining ASU in the field will be Alabama, Nicholls State and UT-Martin.  A-State travels to Memphis on Sept. 27 before competing in its fourth and final tournament of the year, the Belmont University Tournament, Sept. 20-21.  Teams joining ASU in the field include Belmont, Alabama-Birmingham and Mississippi State.

"It is a challenging schedule, but that's what you have to do to get prepared for the conference season," A-State volleyball coach David Rehr said.  "We're going to three tournaments hosted by SEC schools and the fourth tournament features an SEC team and is hosted by an NCAA Tournament team from last season.  It's also going to be interesting to play the three new members of the conference and the new double round-robin format we've gone to."

A-State begins Sun Belt Conference play Sept. 27 in its first home match of the season against new member Georgia State.  ASU plays Troy Sept. 28 to conclude its two-match home-stand at the Convocation Center.

The Red Wolves go on the road for a match against in-state rival Arkansas-Little Rock Oct. 2, before returning to the Convocation Center for two matches.  A-State will take on South Alabama Oct. 4 and Louisiana-Lafayette Oct. 6.

ASU hits the road for two straight matches against new conference opponents with the first coming against Texas State on Oct. 11, followed by a match against Texas-Arlington Oct. 12.

A-State returns to Jonesboro for a four-match home-stand beginning Oct. 18 against Louisiana-Monroe, followed by a match against Western Kentucky Oct. 19.  The Red Wolves then take on in-state opponent Arkansas-Pine Bluff Oct. 23 in its final non-conference match of the season.  Those three matches will be played at the Convocation Center while the last match of the home-stand against Texas-Arlington is scheduled to take place in the HPESS on Oct. 25.

ASU will face Western Kentucky in a road contest Oct. 27 before coming home to square off against Arkansas-Little Rock Oct. 30 in the Convocation Center.

The Red Wolves begin a five-match road swing Nov. 1 at South Alabama, followed by a match at Louisiana-Lafayette Nov. 3.  Arkansas State will then travel to Troy on Nov. 8, Georgia State on Nov. 9, and finish the road swing at Louisiana-Monroe Nov. 15.

The final regular season and home match will take place Nov. 17 against Texas State in the Convocation Center.

The Sun Belt Conference Tournament will be held in Troy, Ala., Nov. 21-23.
