I-155 back open after barge hit bridge

CARUTHERSVILLE, MO (KAIT/AP) – Traffic is once again moving on Interstate 155 on Thursday morning after a barge hit the bridge connecting southeast Missouri to Tennessee.

According to the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Department, the barge hit the bridge around 5:45 a.m. Thursday morning. The collision prompted the closing of the bridge, but both lanes are back open.

No injuries were reported. Officials were called to look at the extent of the damage to the bridge.

Nichole Lawrence of the Tennessee Department of Transportation says one barge struck the bridge, forcing its temporary closure. An inspection showed no damage, and the bridge reopened within two hours. She did not have details on how the accident occurred.

On Saturday, 114 barges broke free from where they were docked near St. Louis, and four struck the Jefferson Barracks Bridge in St. Louis County. The bridge was closed temporarily and reopened after an inspection found no significant damage.
