A-State Track Wins 16 Events in Day Two of ASU Red Wolves Open

JONESBORO, AR (ASU) – A combined 16 first-place performances were recorded by the Arkansas State University men's and women's outdoor track & field teams at this Saturday's (April 27) second annual Red Wolves Open, which was held at the ASU Track and Facility Complex in Jonesboro, Ark.

The A-State men's team featured nine event winners in Saturday's second day of competition while the women's squad won seven events despite enduring wet conditions throughout the entire non-scoring meet.

Freshman Lance Beckman won his first collegiate outdoor event by taking top honors in the 1,500-meter run with an ASU Red Wolves Open-record 4:03.61 time, breaking the previous mark of 4:04.17.  Junior Joey Meyer took first-place honors in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes with a pair of meet record times.  Meyer clocked 10.62 in the 100 meters and then ran a 21.07 in the 200 meters to surpass the prior best times of 10.80 and 22.22 in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, respectively.  In the 5,000-meter run, freshman Wil Norris crossed the finish line first in a 15:21.43 time to earn his first top placing at ASU, just ahead of junior David Mills' second-place time of 15:36.11.

Junior Kashef Daniel, this week's (April 25) Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Men's Field Athlete of the Week, placed first in the high jump for the third time this outdoor season with a 5-10.75/1.80m effort.  Senior Solomon Williams earned second place in the triple jump at 49-07/15.11m as did junior Will Oliver in the long jump following a length of 23-06.25/7.17m.  The Red Wolves claimed three of the top four placings in the pole vault, led by junior Shane Heathcock's second-place 15-11.00/4.85m performance.

Arkansas State's 'A' squad, consisting of Joey Meyer, Lucas Bateman, sophomore Devin Noel, and junior Richard Williams, won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:20.84.

The 110-meter hurdles' top finisher was Solomon Williams, who compiled a conference outdoor third-fastest 14.49 time.  Lucas Bateman was second at 14.73 and senior Ethan Turpen garnered third place with a 14.74 time.

The Red Wolves were also highly successful in the field events as evident by junior Richard Chavez generating first-place showings in the shot put and discus throw.  Chavez set a Red Wolves Open record in the shot put with a personal-best 60-03.25/18.37m throw this season, narrowing missing his personal-record of 60-05.59/18.43m set at the Southeast Missouri State Joey Haines Invitational last spring (4/6).  However, Chavez managed to best his prior meet mark of 54-07.51/16.65m from a year ago.  His toss of 167-00.32/50.91m in the discus afforded him top billing in front of junior Chris Nicasio, who achieved second-place recognition as a result of a 158-04.39/48.27m effort.

On the women's side, Arkansas accumulated seven first-place performances.  Junior Sharika Nelvis posted the meet's top times in both the 100-meter dash and the 100-meter hurdles.  Nelvis dashed to a first-place 11.71 time in the 100 meters before establishing a new meet record in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.43, bettering her 2012 meet time of 13.43.  Freshman EmenderlynIwuji would finish behind Nelvis in second with a 14.39 100-meter hurdles time, but did outperform all competitors in the triple jump with a lap of 39-00.25/11.89m.  Her jump also shattered the ASU Red Wolves Open previous best of 38-06.59/11.75m.  Senior Jamie Curry's 38-04.75/11.70m triple jump distance was good for runner-up honors.

Senior Stephanie Foreman captured first place in the pole vault and established a new meet record by clearing the bar at 13-03.50/4.05m, exceeding the heighth of 12-09.54/3.90 in last season's inaugural ASU Red Wolves Open (4/28).  Senior Julia Agawu earned top placing in the discus event for the second consecutive meet to date as she tallied a toss of 162-08.75/49.60m.  Junior Kim (Ludick) Raath garnered second place in the shot put with a personal record 47-07.25/14.51m effort, surpassing her 46-06.25/14.18m throw set at the LSURelays last month (3/22).   Sophomore Savannah Hutchinson led the Red Wolves in the long jump with a second-place 18-05.26/5.62m distance.  Senior LaKeitha Minter earned a share of third place in the high jump at 5-00.25/1.53 and freshman Macey Rodely would generate a 103-10.84/31.67 throw in the javelin to receive third-place laurels.  Emenderlyn Iwuji would post a third-place jump of 18-01.71/5.53 in the long jump to go along with her first and second-place performances.

Senior Samantha Salinas outdistance all runners in the 1,500 meters to gain top billingwith a 4:43.29 time.  Junior Kristina Aubert clocked a 4:44.15 time to take second place.  Sophonore Heather Newberry paved the way for A-State in the 800 meters with a second-best 2:19.37 time.

The Red Wolves' 4x400-meter relay team turned in a first-place time of 3:59.85, which featured freshman Alecia Dodds, junior Kelsey Bean, freshman Sabrina Antimo, and freshman Charlotte Williams.

Arkansas State is now idle until May 10-12 when the Red Wolves compete in the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Outdoor Championships in Miramar, Fla., with FIU serving as the conference meet host.
